HE Dr Mohammed Al-Hadid was interested in the
work of the Red Crescent from childhood and as
soon as he was old enough became a volunteer -
he became head of the Youth branch and in 1993
was elected President.
Since 1985 then he has become deeply involved in
the work of the Movement internationally and in
2003 was elected Chairman of the Standing
Commission – the highest body in the Red Cross
and Red Crescent Movement. Apart from his
numerous other responsibilities he has been
instrumental in achieving the adoption of the
Additional Protocol to the Geneva Conventions of
12 August 1949 relating to the acceptance of an
additional distinctive emblem – the Red Crystal
– to be used alongside the present Cross and
Crescent. Dr Al-Hadid will chair the
International Conference in Geneva in June when
the Statutes of the Movement will be amended so
that they are in synchrony with the tools of
International Humanitarian Law.
His leadership during the 1990/91 Gulf Crisis
earned him the reputation of adhering to the
principles and humanitarian values of the Red
Cross/Red Crescent for which he was awarded gold
medals from both the American Red Cross and the
Iraqi Red Crescent. He is an unwavering
humanitarian who believes in open dialogue and
the rights and dignity of every individual. His
philosophy is that only by understanding the
diversity of all races and cultures can the
Movement be strengthened to achieve a more
harmonious and peaceful world.
Despite his international commitments he
continues to expand the activities of the Jordan
Red Crescent throughout the kingdom and is a
member of numerous Committees and Boards. On his
election as Chairman of the Standing Commission
he was awarded the title of Maali/Minister by HM
King Abdullah II in recognition of services
rendered to his country.
